By setting a category as anchor (Display Settings > Is Anchor > Yes) we tell Magento that the specified category will only serve as a container in which the products from all the subcategories will be displayed, with the option to filter them with Layered Navigation. The category itself may not even contain products.
Products will be displayed consequently from each category. If there are many subcategories and many products in each of these subcategories, pagination will be applied and there is a chance that the customer will never get to see some of the products.
Display Products Grouped By Subcategories changes the standard display of products in an anchor category:
Instead of displaying all products in one long list of products from all subcategories, a few products from every subcategory will be displayed on the page. You may configure the amount of products that will be displayed from each category.
Display Products Grouped By Subcategories only works when the parent category itself does not contain products. Layered Navigation works as usual.

Hi, I am wondering about this app. Does it use its own theme php file or it add the block using existing theme file?
I cant see on the screenshots the toolbar. Is it also following the ordering as standard toolbar or you can additionally set it as random for example? (Posted on 1/14/12)
